Make sustainable back-to-school choices without sacrificing function, style, or convenience

August is one of the busiest shopping months of the year. With the school year around the corner, it is easy to get caught up in the rush to buy new supplies, tech, and dorm essentials. But shopping smart does not have to mean shopping more. By being intentional with your purchases, you can reduce waste and avoid the green guilt that often follows overconsumption.

Start with your school supplies. Before buying anything new, take stock of what you already have. Reuse notebooks with blank pages, refill pens and highlighters, and keep folders or binders that are still in good shape. If you do need to purchase, look for recycled or FSC-certified paper products and durable items that will last beyond one term.

For dorm shopping, focus on items that are reusable, multi-purpose, or secondhand.

  • Choose a drying rack instead of relying on dryers

  • Bring reusable containers, mugs, and cutlery

  • Use a power bar with an on-off switch to manage energy use

  • Shop marketplaces or thrift stores for lamps, organizers, and decor

When it comes to tech, bigger purchases like laptops deserve extra thought. Extending the life of your current device is one of the most impactful choices you can make. Regular cleanups, safe storage, and system updates can go a long way. If you do need to buy new, research brands that offer take-back programs, repair services, or environmentally conscious production practices.

Some companies also give back to environmental or social causes with each purchase. Look for those that align with your values and do more than just advertise sustainability.

Back-to-school season should feel exciting, not overwhelming. Making mindful choices will not only help the planet but also reduce clutter and save money in the long run. You do not have to be perfect to make a difference. Progress starts with one thoughtful decision at a time.
